Is dyslexia a sign of a low IQ?

For many years, dyslexia was considered to be the main symptom of some type of emotional problems that directly affected the progress of school-age children. Thanks to technological advances, it allowed us to discern how our brain reacted with certain types of stimulations. But before, these dysfunctions were commonly generalized as a lack of intelligence due to being incorrectly diagnosed and not receiving adequate professional help.

Today, there still is the tendency to place the person in a category of neurobiological dysfunction for the rest of their lives.

Before understanding the origin behind dyslexia, children who suffered from this were considered to be “slow” at learning and generally were sent to a psychologist to help them understand their limitations.

The key is correctly diagnosing the issue at the precise moment, as the child needs to understand some certain facts about language points, reading and writing to be sure it is dyslexia. They will need to have begun school, at least up till second or third grade. However, it is important to observe their progress from kindergarten, since it is manifest at an early age.

Dyslexia is something that will be with your child for the rest of their life, but they can learn how to work with it, so it doesn’t prevent them from learning.
